1/48 F4U-7 12.Flottille Nov 1956 - Your Favorite Aircraft of All Time GB

    User Name: Catch22
    Category: 3, Beginner
    Entry: F4U-7, 12.F.12, 133684, 12.Fottille during the Suez Crisis, November 1956
    Kit: Revell Ex-Hasegawa 1/48 F4U-7

Well, here's the last version of the F4U that I have to build before I've built all of the major types. I've decided to do the Suez Crisis scheme in the box, even though I can't find any photos of this particular aircraft. If anyone has any, they'd be very useful! No extras or anything, but I'll probably bomb it up.

The F4U-7 was basically an AU-1 with an engine from an F4U-4, literally. The airframes were built new by Vought, but the engines were taken off of old -4s no longer in use. The French had ex-US AU-1s and liked them, but wanted a performance boost, hence the engine change.

This obviously isn't mine, but it's the best I can do to show the scheme.

Here are some general photos of -7s.

Nice one Cory. I did a similar scheme around 20 years ago, based on the airworthy example then at Duxford. I might have some pics of the real one somewhere - if I can find them !

Thanks guys, and thanks a lot Karl! Forgot about that thread.

Jelmer, I've built 2 of these already, as the -5 and AU-1 are basically the same kit. There's a bad mold seam on the nose but otherwise it's a good kit.

Yeah, I heard about the bad mold line on the nose. Didn't it have something to do with the multi-version part breakdown Hasegawa opted for rather then tool up a new fuselage for the different versions? Should be helpful (for my build) to see how you handle that, as I have both the -5 Korean war night fighter and this -7 Frenchie. I got both kit cheap @ swat meets, and since they are both Hasegawa (despite the nose defects) I decided to get them anyway. BTW, didn't Hasegawa (partly) re-tool their Corsair series of kits in more recent year to deal with the nose issues among other things, or am I mistaking it with kits of other a/c? In other words, aren't these revell reboxings the older Hasegawa kits?

Still...should make into a nice looking French a/c

I tried sanding it down on the -5 and AU-1 but I'm not very good at rescribing so I was a little more careful than some people with more skill than I may be. I'm not sure about re-toolings with newer Hasegawa kits but my Revell -7 has the ridge, as did both the AU-1 and F4U-5.
