A Century of Military Aircraft

One of the lesser known events from this day in history. But important non the less.

Dec 23rd 1907 (MONDAY)

UNITED STATES: Brigadier General James Allen, U.S. Army Chief Signal Officer, issues the first specification for a military airplane. It calls for an aircraft that could carry two people, fly at a minimum speed of 40 miles per hour (64 kilometers per hour), go 125 miles (201 kilometers) without stopping, be controllable for flight in any direction, and land at its takeoff point without damage.

Hmmm, land without damage. I guess that kinda depends on the pilot, eh?

Now lets go back to the original descriptions of landings:

Good landing: A landing that the pilot walks away from
Great landing: one that let's you use the plane tomorrow.

I wonder what "the experts" would have said, if he included in his spec's,
"capable of mid-air refuelling"..... ?
