The Kop

One end of the Anfield stadium of Liverpool Football Club was renamed Spion Kop in 1906 (later shortened to 'The Kop') after the battle of Spion Kop, in present day South Africa. This was a hill where Boer guerrillas inflicted a heavy defeat on the British Army in 1900. Many of the men killed were from the North-West of England, which made the name particularly poignant.

Some other Football clubs around the country also named a part of their terraces after Spion Kop; notably at St.Andrews in Birmingham and Hillsborough in Sheffield.
