| Prop tips... Just had a quick thought....most models of prop driven 'planes that are built, always seem to have the prop tips painted a nice bright yellow. Surely this didnt happen in real life ?. I can understand that it shows you the prop disc while the engine is running....you should see the black and white striped blades on our Tucano's ....yeuch !....but would this have been the norm in wartime use ?

| Most WW2 props were painted in factories and when testing it could be a good protection for people worked there. But even during a war the safety is something important so no wonder that many of them had these tips yellow or white painted.

| Wojtek is right Gary, the tips were still yellow during WW2, at least in the allied Air Forces. I haven't seen such markings on Luftwaffe aircraft, although certain aircraft had the rear face of the prop a different colour. It is, and was, a very important safety factor as, believe it or not, it can be very easy to accidentally walk into a spinning prop. I saw it happen to a guy who stepped back into the prop on an Argosy - not pleasant to see the result!

| ![]() ![]() Here is a few pictures of the captured B-17 the Luftwaffe had. As you can see they had the yellow tips painted on the prop. Hopefully this will help a little bit.
