Red 13

I have found a picture of the Fw190 A8 "Red 13" flown by JG1 commander Major Heinz Bar. I am guessing it had the usual RLM paint for coloring, but I am looking for the cowling detail, and the detail on the rudder, that signified 200 kills. I was wondering if anyone could help me out. This is one of the other color schemes that I am looking at for my 1/4 scale model that I am starting this winter.

Wurger, I thank you in advance, since you seem to have a welth of pictures, and info, on this series of planes.

There is some discrepancy as to whether Red13 was an A-7 or A-8.... I think it was an A-7 but there are several resources out there that say it was an A-8....

I have found these two profile. Both are with captions Fw190A-7. The plane was painted with the standard camo scheme RLM74/75/76 with white rudder and yellow underside of the engine cowling. The spinner with the white spiral like in the third profile.

Just as a side note Bar was flying "Red 23" when he notched up his 200th victory.

That's true Paul. Bar scored his 200th victory flying the " Red 23". But I have't seen the pic of the rudder of the Fw190A.That's way there is no evidence the kind of marking was on it.The Red13 had the victory markings on the rudder what can be seen in the pic below. And it seems that Bar used both planes at the same period of time simultaneously.

Bar's Red 13 was definitely an A-7, the Werk Nummer is confirmed as 431007.

Did the A7 version still have the gun hump up front, or was that just the A8?

scroll down almost to the bottom of that page for a comparison between the A-7 and the A-8

The main difference that allows to recognize A-7 or A-8 is the Pitot tube.A-7 had it mounted in the middle of the leading edge of the starboard wing. For A-8 it was moved to the wing tip.The A-8 had MW-50 installation mounted, so there is the MW-50 tank inlet on the port side below the cockpit conopy. The ETC 501 rack mounted under the fuselage was moved 20cm nearer towards the engine to get a correct position of GC.Because the A-8 was equipped with FuG 16ZY radio-set so the new antenna ( Morane type) appeared under the port wing.

Yep This is the second pic of the Bar's Red 13. The pic with the Red23 in showes Bar getting out from Fw190A cockpit when gathered 200th victory.Unfortunately the rudder can't be seen.
