| May 1941 - The Iraq Mission Hello to all - this is my first post. I've been collecting photos of Luftwaffe, Iraqi, British and Italian aircraft that were involved in the May, 1941 uprising of Iraq against the British. The German and Italian aircraft photos are of particular interest because they carrried Iraqi markings rather than German or Italian. I would appreciate any additional photos of aircraft from this short, but interesting episode of the war. | World Traveller ![]() | The British landed troops in Basra to quell the uprising. Here is a website on it: The Iraq coup of Raschid Ali in 1941, the Mufti Husseini and the Farhud (Farhoud) Interesting pics Mike!

| Italian aircraft used during the Iraq Mission Good Afternoon Gents - AeroFan nr 96 includes an article on Italian Aircraft used during the Iraq Mission or 'squadriglia speciale Iraq' as it was called. I typically purchase AeroFan through Lela Presse which is located at: Avions Bateaux | Le Site des EDITIONS LELA PRESSE, Spécialistes de l'Histoire de l'Aviation et de la Marine. Excellent service, orders always complete and shipped quickly. Several of the following photos are from the AeroFan article or were sent to me from unknown sources by friends. A very rare photo of an Italian CR 42 in Iraqi markings. The CR 42s in Iraq were Regia Aeronautica with Italian pilots; but Iraqi markings as with the Luftwaffe aircraft that participated. ![]() A skewed, close up photo of a CR 42 fuselage, showing the Iraqi insignia application. ![]() SM 79Bs were purchased by the Iraqis prior to WWII. The Italians sold the aircraft, armament, bombs and additional engines to the Iraqis. Orders for the Breda 65 were also placed. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Interesting photo of a crash landed SM 81 on Rhodes. The Italians used SM 79s and SM81s as escorts to CR 42s flying to / from Iraq. The SMs provided radio and navigational aide during the flight. ![]() I would certainly appreciate contributions from any Board member. Mike |

| Those bombers have to be among the ugliest planes of all time.

| World Traveller ![]() | They are not that bad, the French bombers are an awful lot worse.

| The photos I've posted are from various publications; I don't own the original photos. I've provided scans and reference citations to the author of the new book. Surprising sometimes what gets missed during a literature review for a new book. |
