Help ID Plane 234178

I have a couple of photos of this plane and pilot and was looking for some help IDing the plane. It has tail number 134 and below is 234178. I think it is a Vultee Valiant, but not sure. I also don't know what the frame is for that the pilot is holding. Thanks for your help.

Not a Valiant. Looks like maybe a Fairchild PT-22. That might be a crash pylon.

Yes, it's a Fairchild, a Primary Trainer (hence PT in the title), and the frame is a roll-over bar, in case of the aircraft flipping onto its back in a crash-landing.

Could it be a PT-19? They had the same thing if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, I think PT-19, as the '22' was, I think, the Ryan aircraft. Sorry, can never remember the American numbering system - much easier with names!

I'm pretty sure it's a Fairchild PT-19 Cornell. Here is one for comparison.



Notice the rollover bar between the seats. The tail shape is the same as well.

The Ryan PT-22 Recruit didn't have a rollover bar, but the windscreens were very similar.

Also, look at the landing gear in the PT-19 and the 22. I'm with Eric, it's a PT-19.

That's what I was thinking, the shots I have and looking at what Eric has there seem to point heavily in the direction of the 19.
