They had another version on the later 4 engine TB-?, had a I-16 under the wing, I don't know if it could link back up or not. They actually used it on some missions in early WW2.
 
The first pic is a TB-1 with a pair of Tupolev I-4 fighters. Tom's was a TB-3 used to bomb bridges and oil pipelines with success. There was another TB-3 program that was armed with the pair of I-16s under the wings, a pair of I-5's on top of the wings and an I-Z that would attached during flight. These could launch and reattach during flight but never actually used.
