The Type VIIA boat U-31 left Lorient on 21 October 1940 for a war cruise under the command of Kapitanleutnant Wilfried Frellberg, but was depth-charged to the surface on 2 November 1940 when north-west of Ireland by the destroyer HMS Antelope, as shown here. The crew abandoned the U-boat before it sank. Forty-four men were rescued, including Frellberg, but two lost their lives. Ref: ADM 199/2057
