This happened about 45 minutes from where I live today. I was not there however. My sympathies for the injured and the family of the person who lost there life. The pilot was not injured.

Berlin — The Associated Press Published on Sunday, Sep. 05, 2010 1:31PM EDT

A pilot of a small propeller-driven plane lost control of his aircraft while taking off at a flight show in southern Germany and crashed into a group of spectators Sunday, leaving one person dead and 33 injured, police said.

The crash occurred at the Lillinghof airfield about 30 kilometres northeast of the city of Nuremberg, a police spokesman said. Four people were seriously injured, while 29 others were slightly injured, he said.

The spokesman, who declined to be named in line with department policy, said it was still unknown why the pilot of the biplane — with two wings, one above the other — lost control.

The pilot was not hurt in the incident, he said.

The flight show was to include stunts by small aircraft and sky divers, helicopter tours and tours with a Russian-built Antonov An-2 biplane, a program posted on the Lauf flight association's website said.

Unfortunate, to say the least. Lets face it, altho the aircraft are usually in mint condition, they are very old and this
kind of stuff will happen. We hope not very often, but it does happen.

Over the week-end we had a Cessna make an emergency landing at a school playing field. He tried to land the
aircraft, but the field was very wet, so it flipped. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

Hate to see it happen. Some people knee jerk react to things like this and want to stop all airshows. It's a shame because the airshow industry is actually quite safe, but when an accident happens, it get a ton of airplay. Things like this get blown way out of proportion. It is tragic, no doubt, but not common, fortunately.

My condolences to the family of the one who died, and prayers for all involved.

Of course, the media will be crawling all over this with false sympathy and slimy empathy. Panic sells, and something like this can be spun to provide news for a couple of weeks, if played right, until the next big scare comes along.
