Flak and Fighters? - Aircraft of World War II

Hi everyone,
New to the board. I'm an aviation artist and airplane fanatic. I'm currently working on a painting of B-17s under attack by FW-190s. I know that generally the fighters stayed away from the bombers while the flak was tearing them up, but does anyone know if this was always the case? Did the german fighters ever get in there amid their own flak to hit the bombers? An F-15 pilot was telling me this was so, I really want to be accurate in the painting, and some flak bursts would add some nice highlights also

Welcome!

While I cannot be 100% certain of course, it would stand to reason that there would be incidents where the fighters ended up attacking at the same time as the flak.

I think they did at Schwienfurt during Black Thursday. Might've been Regensburg but IIRC, during this raid, the fighters stayed with them all the way through the mission. No US Fighter cover over Germany proper so it was a long flight for the bombers.

I think the details can be found in Martin Cadin's book on the B17.
