Yeah, I wouldn't have wanted to be a glider trooper for those reasons you stated, plus they were paid less than regular paratroopers too. They're either effective or a disaster, D-Day glider operations being a little bit of a combination of the two.

Operation Eiche, the German rescue of Mussolini.

The initial landings of Operation Market Garden.

I believe that glider pilots (and Grasshopper observation plane pilots) didn't get the extra pay that other pilots get above regular army officers. Flying a flimsy plywood aircraft made by a an ex-coffin maker into combat zones should warrant something extra....
