| 'Operation Jericho' 64th anniversary Operation Jericho remembered in Hunsdon By Louise Meeson A POIGNANT service is being held to commemorate the anniversary of Operation Jericho which took off from Hunsdon Airfield. The moving ceremony and silence, which will be led by retired vicar and trained fighter pilot Jim Ledger, takes place at the airfield memorial, off Acorn Street, on Sunday (February 17) at 10.30am. It marks the departure of the Second World War raid from the site on February 18, 1944, at 10.30am. Cllr David Gibbs, chairman of Hunsdon Parish Council, said: "The 19 De Havilland Mosquito fighter bombers left Hunsdon in appalling weather conditions of driving snow and subzero temperatures. "The purpose of the raid was to release personnel from Amiens jail in northern France, who, according to intelligence, were to be shot the following day because they were members of resistance groups." source: Hertfordshire Mercury
