Country:  | Yes, that's the one. They tried to land it on a grass field. The nose gear collapsed. I think they ended up using the main gear on one off the prototypes. I would have to look it up again. I do remember reading something about that.

Country: | Good stuff there, Dogwalker. The stories of captured aircraft has always been an area of interest to me. I did a presentation at the museum "Captured Eagles" about the American aircraft captured and flown by the Luftwaffe. Apparently, I am not the only one to find the subject interesting. I had an audience of about 75.

Country: | After the Lancaster Raids all he Lancasters returned to England except for 6 which were damaged pretty bad. It was One MK.III and 5 MK. I's. 2 of them (those with the least damage) were taken to KEGOSTROV where they were repaired and modified in the workshops of the Air Force of the White Sea Flotilla under the direction of chief engineer KIR'YANOV. All armament was removed and the nose section was replaced with a transperant one.
This particular one with the Ident number 01 was used by the 16th Transport Flight for convoy escort, submarine detection flights and reconnaissance. In August 1945 it was sent to the Pacific but became stranded at KRASNOYARSK due to lack of fuel. In the summer of 1946 it was flown to RIGA where it was used as an educational aid by the aviation technical college.
The other Lancaster with the Ident number 02 served with the 70th Independent Transport Regiment of the Northern Fleet Air Force and eventually crashed whilst landing at IZMAILOVO outside Moscow at the end of the war and was written off.

| There are also all the Superforts that landed in Rodina that the Russians copied to make thier first post-war stratigic bombers. One of these original B-29s I think is still in display in some Russian museum.
