    SCR-182/283

    Hi,

i have a question about the remote control boxes for the SCR-183/283 command sets. The operating procedures are described in several flight manuals (P-47B, Cessna UC-78, Beech T-7) and always included is the phrase to "set the selector switch on the receiver control box to MANUAL". I could not found any pictures or descriptions but this selector switch seems to have three positions - OFF (receiver & transmitter), MANUAL and AUTO. What are the MANUAL and AUTO positions actually for?

    Thanks for your help.

    Fynn

They refer to manual or automatic volume control. Auto was normally used with voice communications, while manual was preferred for CW work or initial signal acquisition, but it really depended on the strength of the signal being received more than anything. One or the other mode would generally be better for any given signal.
