That would be a question for our founder, Horse. ww2aircraft.net was registered on 12/4/1999 while ww2aircraft.com was registered on 12/26/1999, so we were technically first. Why .net was chosen over .com, I dunno.

What are the rules for registration of .net and .org names?

They are the same as for .com. Traditionally, however, names in .net have been used by organizations involved in Internet infrastructure activities and .org is frequently used by not-for-profit organizations.

Looks like we fail the test.

That's not always the case. I have seen a lot of .nets that are not infrastructure.

Obviously, just wanting to reflect historical precedence. Based upon what I have seen from registrars the option is wide open.

the lines have blurred. ".com" was supposed to be designated for commercial businesses.

.net and .org have no restrictions, The extensions with restrictions soon die. .LA-- which belongs to Laos used to have restrictions but they decided to open it up and become the official extension of Los Angeles.

.CA --- you have to be a Canadian. .TV belongs to Tilovi but anyone can buy it..

.jobs - you have to jump through hoops for.

here are some of the restrictions:
