How quickly would the Hiroshima bomb have lost it's forward momentum when dropped? The B29 would turn at release and the bomb would still have forward momentum in the previous direction of travel, this would add some further separation, although certainly not all the difference suggested.

Effectively Zoom climb is trading kinetic energy for height, those with a lot of kinetic energy to convert tend to do better in this regard, so all else being equal, the heavier aircraft will have a better zoom.

True or not it's going to make the aircrews a lot more nervous now.

The first flight was literally days after I was born and I spent most of my career in the RAF working on these things.

Unfortunately, with the state of the German economy in 1940, the option of Germany just pulling out of France was pretty much nil. They needed to loot France to keep Germany going. Adam Tooze's book The Wages Of Destruction is very good on this.
