I have a love of the Brewster F2A Buffalo and the Finnish B-239 versions, definitely a unique aircraft.
The Ju-86 is something that doesn't get much recognition, it was a workhorse but was surpassed by the He-111. My favorite is the Ju-86P and R versions. They had pressurized cabins and used...
You left a comment on my profile about 5 years ago regarding a post I made about 13 years ago calling me out saying I was wrong when I stated that a turbine benefits from water injection. See your original comment on my page please.
This reply is about 5 years too late because I've not been on here in at least 10 years. But who said water injection was only applicable to internal combustion engines. Water injection does a lot for a turbine too. It cools the turbine allowing allowing more fuel to be injected and burned. It...
Hey buddy, I don't visit this forum much, but the first thread I read I see a post of yours and that you're from Pound. I'm just a little ways away from you in Nickelsville. Take care!
I've seen FiFi a bunch of times and each time have made it out to watch her fly out. One weekend a couple years ago I knew FiFi and Diamond Lil were coming in to a local airport, I knew roughly when they'd left and when they were supposed to arrive. I had been mowing the yard and came in for a...
Jank,
44-1 is basically 100/150 (or 104/150 depending on what you read) octane avgas. It had 6 cc of lead per gallon as opposed to the 4 cc of lead per gallon of 100/130 octane.
I dont know how all this relates to 115/145 avgas and dont know the lead content of it either.
Bob Mann's book shows 136 XX Bomber Command losses but doesnt have a tally for the XXI Bomber Command. I could go through the entire serial number list and count em all but at the time that seems like too much effort. Bob's book has a list of circumstances for each B-29 but it doesnt go into...
The US also had a radar guided bomb called the Bat that worked particularly well against shipping. It was basically a 1000lb GP bomb with wings and a tailplane that was carried usually be PB4Y-2 Privateers. When a Japanese ship was spotted it was dropped. The ship being the only radar return...
Youve got to remember that the Jet Stream wasnt exactly a phenomina observed over Europe... it was over Japan. The jet stream argument is not really founded because bombers of the time were capable and did operate in the altitude where the jet stream was found... except in Europe it just wasnt...
Not quite, it has 2 sorta separate cabins. The front cabin housing the pilot and such was connected by a 30 some inch tunnel, which could not be closed, to the aft cabin where the gunners were. You loose pressurization in one youve lost it in both.
Plus the tail gunners compartment received...
Just a couple quick notes, Im sorta running late and wont be able to write much.
It was standard proceedure with the B-29 to be unpressurized when in any combat area. This is seen in both WWII and Korea.
The CFC system was not perfect but it was pretty good. Ill have to dig around but I...
Les could you please post the video or a link to it?
I must be thinking of another video.... I remember at the end of the one Im talking about they have a cool slow motion view showing the wing folding over... pretty dramatic!
If you do some more searching I believe you can find a video of that same B-29 breaking up during a slow roll. I seem to remember the wing folding just outside of one of the outer engines (I dont remember if it was outside 1 or 4 though).
If I remember correctly some of the early carbureted R-3350's would make around 200 ~ 250 hrs, near the end of the war after numerous improvments and the addition of direct fuel injection they could make around 500 or more hours.
