Why do you "hate" the P-51? It was a very capable aircraft that deserves its place in history even if it has acheived a mythical status.

Kinda scares me even thinking about landing the damn thing. There's a natural tendency to drive the plane in the direction that you're looking... and landing in that regime looking backward over your shoulder would be very dangerous with respect to drift.

You have a point - but IR missiles "see" the infrared bands, so if they can acquire the heat source they will awlays be a threat. There is also new missile technology that is making its way on the scene as well.
