That sounds as though Saint-Ex himself could have written it :-k
I agree. As long as all the safety precautions possible are taken and there are experienced pilots willing to fly them - why not?
Besides the landing gear could have failed on any aircraft (and do) plus the majority of this...
Here is a fantastic link with a few warbird films (some shot on old 8mm/16mm cameras). The sound quality is great on some of them - in particular that Pratt Whitney Double Wasp in the P-47 'Little Demon' film and the Packard Merlin in the 'P-51 at Oppenheim' film 8)

Enjoy!
For anyone who is interested - here is a rather lengthy debate over at the 'Ubizoo', from a while ago, regarding Hartmann's 'claims', official records, the "missing logbook" etc. IMO it was a very interesting discussion. However it also turned into a bit of a flame war!
Hi Soren,
I am curious as to where you read that Hartmann was an 'awe-inspiring shot'. He was certainly a very shrewd fighter pilot - he had a very cautious style and wouldn't engage unless he had all the advantages possible. In short he had the qualities of a great fighter pilot in that he was...
I'm with pbfoot.

I have that DVD Snautzer - it's superb!8)
Indeed. What exactly is the criteria for best WWII fighter pilot?
I would have to agree with Adler that Hartmann should be considered the greatest purely for an official score that will never be surpassed.
Then there is Marseille - yes he was a brilliant pilot and superb marksman...
I don't want to 'split hairs' but the MG131 was 13mm was it not? Anyway, i get what you are saying about the MGs of that general calibre.
I would have to agree with you there. But what about shooting things like armoured Plexiglass, damaging engines etc. at greater distances and different...
Hi all,
I wonder if Galland would still have requested (sardonically) a staffel of Messerschmitts from Göring, instead of Spitfires?
I agree with HoHun - anyone seriously interested in the Battle of Britain would be doing themselves an immense disservice by not reading this excellent...
Kurfurst - whilst i don't doubt your considerable knowledge of the 109, i seriously doubt night-fighting (and exhaust glare in particular) was a consideration in the design of a 1930s fighter.
Has anyone seen 'One Summer, Two Messerscmitts' DVD? In it a pilot who has flown both the DB-engined...
Hi all,
As my first post, I was wondering what the people here think of/know about the MG131:
How much better was the MG131 than the MG17 (besides just the increase in calibre)?
Was the the extra weight and drag worth the extra hitting power gained?
I've read that the hitting power was...
