thanks for the info guys. i've heard story's about how the 38 was outclassed by single engine aircraft, yet some of our best ace's flew it. what would a P 38 need to do against German planes boom and voom or run for it.
i've been thinking again and came up with a few questions.
1. when in a dogfight could the pilot use throttles to change how the engines worked? i mean one engine on full power the other on half. if so how would the change the flight characteristics, is there any advantage to doing something...
i guess i was looking for a more all around answer. when they find a FW 190 that crashed in 1944 or pull a P38 out of a glacier or where ever. how much of the original plane do they need to be able to say "this is a WW2 plane".
this thread makes me wonder something. what part of the plane makes it a plane? i mean if they decided to bring that wildcat all the way back to flying condition and they had to make 90% of the from scratch, would it still be a WW2 fighter or a new plane with some old parts.
with the hellcat being a lot heavier than the mustang and it has a 2000 hp engine i would have thought that it could out dive about anything like the P-47. so what am i missing
sorry but i didn't take the time to read the whole thread, but here i go anyway.
while i understand that the P-51 was better than the hellcat at higher altitude and had longer range and better top speed. but i had always thought that the hellcat was better at low altitude turning fight and it...
yea over all it is pretty obvious that it's not the most realistic game i mean what are the chance's that 4 ME 262's would get into a slow low level turning fight? i also get to fight 335 in a slow turning fight, in this game it 's much harder to kill a 190 than any other plane they just roll...
sometime my brain get stuck on something and just eats at me
i've been playing a Microsoft combat flight simulator 3 battle for Europe. well when the game started i had to fly P 47 which flew quite nicely at 25,000 feet but as they lost altitude it turn over to the 109's 190's . it also...
Joe, i hope things work out for your family.
i'm sorry that it took me a while to find that article. it was in a special edition from Flight Journal about the P-38 written by Barrett Tillman a Lieutenant Joe Foster flying with the 475th fighter group. Flying a P-38L he lost an engine to a...
is one really better than the other? i use to drive a ford diesel that had a turbo and it seemed to have some lag time from when you punched it till it really took off, but once it got rolling it gave a lot of power.
first off let me say that you guys are the Kings of knowledge when it comes to all things plane or engine related.
but do have a question about turbo's and superchargers. what i would like is break down on the different's of the two type's. or was just a way to say the same thing with two...
a couple of months ago i bought a magazine about P38's. while it told a lot of good story's there was one where on a escort mission to the Borneo oil refinery a P38 took a 20 mm cannon shell to an engine, then he limped over 800 miles home on 1 engine. they said it was the longest known flight...
wow it would seem to be a one way mission unless they could get more fuel in their planes. but if they did bomb pearl the carriers would have to come out and play
