I bought it from a chap. He didn't know anything about it save that it was from either a spitfire or a hurricane. It came from a large private collection of aviation archeology.
I bought rather a lot from him and this is one of the few items I can't place.

Thanks for your responses. I fully understand. It was just a thought. I'm clearing up parts of my extensive collection through eBay and a couple of auction houses.
I might start a blog of what I've sold, and what is in my collection that isn't for sale.

Your descriptions accurately describe the weather in York most of the time.
It's a great little museum at elvibgton. They upgraded the Barnes Wallis exhibit a few years back which is rather good.
