TA152 and FW190-Series Aircraft Stabilisation and Engine Management Systems.......

The quote on the operation of the kommando gerat was from me. I have gotten two of these to function now. I also have a translation of the operation of the unit with the curves for each part. If you want to send me your email I'll get a scan done and send it to you. Or I could just post it if...

Does engine knock occur more easily at higher Or lower RPM?

Knock happens when the boost exceeds the norm for any given RPM The old saying of rpm first then boost going up and opposite going down on power is to prevent detonation. on the Allison piston and ring mod comments, Really? when rings are fitted to pistons the groove is deeper than the ring...

    Allison exhaust unknown

It is an Allison stack Left side based on stud holes not P-38, they were collector types not P-39 or 63, they had rectangular exits P-40 had curved exits, one per cylinder P-51 A had Allison and round exhausts match many Allison's were shipped with the exhaust flanges and hardware for aircraft...

    Engine thoughts

The buildings are bolted to the foundations. That and Tehachapi has 4 seasons and is 2 hours to LA. We can be at the beach or ski in 3 hours or so. Of course working in California one learns that every loop-hole has a matching regulation! I will have more on the Jumo engines later this summer.

Radial and Inline engines are backwards?

Wow! what a wast of peoples time. Lets have a history lesson: First engines were built in Germany, Then England, US, France, Italy, and soon everyone was building. Then we went from cars to airplanes with a huge number of manufactures making engines. Now add in the fact that all the early...

    Engine thoughts

This is a great site and now I understand the Yellow band. I have a few engines that I have worked on over the years and seen a lot over that time. From what I can see so far it's important that note the difference between documented knowledge and personal experience. All else is opinion. As I...

    Jumo 213 E Question

some observations on pics, The prop shaft has the oil tubing for the fighter prop with the cannon going through the prop shaft. The inlet to the supercharger has the movable vanes in the inlet to regulate the air flow into the impeller. This was controlled by the boost pressure regulator. Not a...

3 blade props, 4 blade props, 5 blade props Why all the props?

just for fun take a P-51 making a low pass over the runway speed is the legal 200 mph engine RPM is 3,000 and prop is .479 times that. Prop has 4 blades. Plot out the distance between the blades at the bottom of their rotation to the forward direction of aircraft. Also on number of blades...

    What's the difference.....?

Maybe you should smoke instead of wasting time on this site. I started worked on P-51's starting in the summer of 1968 at Volpar, in Calif. Yellow with blue strip on side from Id. Lysander in '73, Merlins and Allisons after that. The engine shop I started now has 32 employees, and rebuilds...

Hamilton Std prop on Allison V-12

So does the R1830 and the R1820. We started using these props on the Allison powered Yak 3 replicas in the mid 1990's. A brand new prop was less than $2,000 then. One more thing is the fine pitch stop in the propeller hub. It is adjusted to give the desired RPM at field barometric boost (30" at...

    What's the difference.....?

Having been around a bit over the last 50 years of my career with Mustangs and many other Warbirds, by the 1970's most Mustangs had the guns removed and cover plates installed over the openings in the wings. That left a smooth leading edge on the front of the wing. That also left the sound we...

    Some Questions About Merlin Engines

All the Rolls engines you quote were built. the Packard 224 is a current choice to keep aircraft flying and bolts in with little changes. Advantage is the better supercharger oil seal on rear bearing and the Bendix PD carb. No more float carb. On the plus side is the late Packard rods but the...
