I recall seeing that 'bedspring' armour set advertised on the web somewhere. It wouldn't surprise me if they were used, I guess they were intended to keep Panzerfaust/Panzershreck warheads away from the tank, so the shaped-charge blast would dissipate by the time it reached the hull. I have seen pics of Shermans festooned with sandbags, spare tracks, chains and all other kinds of detritus to keep German shells out...

Ah, found a link to the kit, it's a Dragon one. Apparently there is a photo of this vehicle fighting in Berlin, which inspied the kit:

Dragon T-34/85 UTZ Mod -Premium Edition with Bed Spring Armour Scale: 1/35 #6266 UK

I would like to have a go at a tank - when I last did kits, in my early teens, I built a number of jeeps, DUKWs, etc, and my tour de force was a German half-track, but I never quite made it to a 'proper' tank. The Tamiya Chieftain Mk5 and Challengers have caught my eye, but I think the stash is big enough for the time being, got three to finish as it is...

I'm gagging to have a go at a 1/35 AFV as well. The Tiger, Kingtiger, Panther, SPGs and Stugs are poking for some attention....

What to choose, what to choose. Might have them send over a kit or two that I have here to have a go at, when back in Glasgow.

I had a look at a Tamiya 1/48 Cromwell last time I was in my local Hobbycraft, although they're dear, they are exceptionally well made kits. I always built Tamiya and Italeri before, and I think you can't go far wrong with them TBH.
