Master of Puppets is the most influential and best metal album ever produced.
I'll second that . . .
I didn't like speed metal/thrash metal/death metal, whatever you want to call it . . . until I heard Master, that is. After that, I was a convert. It really put Metallica on the map and was the true beginning of their popularity.
I'll only list five (5) albums:
1. Metallica - Master Of Puppets
2. Led Zeppelin - IV (Zoso)
3. Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive!
4. Van Halen - Van Halen
5. Eagles - Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975)

Ok, a little preface before I cast my list out there.
I'm a drummer, so my list are the albums that influenced my drumming, not neccessarily something that struck a poingant chord in me as a youngster (which would make a short list, as it would be a bunch of 60's surf music).
SO, bearing that in mind, here we go...
Rod Strewart - Every Picture Tells a Story
Rod Stewart - Gasoline Alley
Rod Stewart - Never a Dull Moment
The Faces - A nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse
Led Zeppelin - II
Led Zeppelin - I
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out
AC/DC - Highway to Hell
The Who - Live at Leeds
Rush - Fly by Night
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon
Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother
Pink Floyd - Meddle
Pink Floyd - Wish you were here
Vince Guraldi - A boy named Charlie Brown
Dreams - Dreams

Lynrd Skynrd - Second Helping
Chet Baker - ...in New York
The Police - Reggatta de Blanc
20/20 - Portrait
(first song I ever learned to play was "Cheri").
...and a whole lot of time spent listening to these guys
...I think that about covers it. I didn't include the 78's I grew up with, because finding pics of particular record labels was kinda tough.
These days I'm more into Jazz and Blues, but I'm really just a glorified "Rock drummer" and I'm ok with that.
