I'm writing a figurative language lesson for my class of 9-10 year olds. It's on similies, metaphors and personification. I want to use music since I"m tired of the same old stories and bangning my head when I don't see my students use figurative language in their own essay writing. I am looking for songs with examples of each to have the kids listen to and try to hear the examples; then we'll do discussions and such on how they improve the song and help with the mental image of the story. Do you know any songs off hand that use similies, metaphors or personification?? (Similie= compares 2 things using like or as...."as lazy as the tropical sun; as smart as a whip) (Metaphor=comparison of 2 unlike things that usually have something in common... not the sharpest tool in the shed; the streets were a furnace; feeling blue...) (Personification= giving human qualities to objects...trees danced in the wind; fear knocked on the door...) So far I have... Fireflies by owl city ol' man river high water everywhere by charly patton the river by garth brooks music of the night by andrew lloyd weber the wind cries mary by jimi hendrix Thanks a bunch!!! (Even Christmas songs would be OK as I can repeat the lesson later around the holidays as a review... jack frost nipping at your nose......)

Off the top of my head: King of pain - The Police: 'Like a king on a throne with his eyes drawn out, Like a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt. Like a rich man sleeping on a golden bed, Like a skeleton choking on the dust of men...' She's like the wind - Patrick Swayze: 'She leads me through moonlight only to burn me with the sun...' ...Will have a think of others for ya. Last edited by A4K; 11-15-2009 at 11:50 AM.

Hungry as a Wolf- Duran Duran, has a simile right in the title I wish I could help you more. If you ever need songs that use imagery alot, or allusion, let me know; we had to do an AP Language and Composition project on songs with imagery and allusion... So I have quite a few examples haha

Ah- we live just on the other side of the highway. My son goes to Abor View and my daughter goes to Cadwalleder. My hubby teaches at A-tech. He used to teach at Cad. we've probably bumped paths without even knowing.

I See Red - Split Enz (NZ group - origins of Crowded house) "Green before you met me, In the pink when you let me love you, I was blue when you let me down, Black and blue... When my baby's walking down the street, I see red, I see red, I see red. How can someone wicked walk round free? I see red, I see red, I see red..." Another Great Divide - Split Enz: "How can I figure this equation, When multiplication's the rule. You keep subtracting me from you, And it just dosen't add up at all. Oh, another great divide, Another great divide."
