One of the best songs I thought that was ever written was Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." Great songwriting along with Al Stewart's "Roads to Moskow".
But as an overall songwriter I've loved Jon Anderson of YES. He really grasps words and makes them flow.
"A seasoned witch could call you from the depths of your disgrace
and rearrange your liver to the solid mental grace."
But for all around songwriting Lennon/McCartney.
