Pilot lands aircraft at wrong airport

The pilot of a Turkish charter flight landed at the wrong airport after mistaking a military airfield near the western Polish town of Poznan for a civilian airport on Wednesday evening, border guards said.
The plane, a Boeing 737 operated by Turkish charter airline company Sky, was bringing tourists back from holidays.
It was supposed to land at the civilian airport of Poznan-Lawica at 17h50 GMT.
Instead it touched down at the Krzesiny military airfield, about 15km away on the other side of Poznan.
The female pilot was questioned by anti-terrorist security forces and border guards.
She "explained that she must have made a mistake," said Bogdan Sobczak, head of the local border police.
"However, she insisted that the plane's instruments showed that everything was in order," Sobczak told the TVN24 television station.
The pilot was allowed to take off after questioning and flew to Poznan-Lawica. The plane later returned to Turkey.

Easier to do than you would think, especially if you're unfamilar with the area.

Also pretty easy to do if you weren't exactly first in your class at navigation...

And she was probably using GPS!

had a couple experiences with novice pilots landing at the wrong airport but some one driving a b737 with lots of time is scary although a quick check reveals both have parrallel runways with similar headings and both have a long and a short rwy the military one shows a cross runway that is no longer used whereas Poznan civil just has the parallel

That happend at a few airports in southern California. Tiny Hawthorne Airport (where Northrop is located) has been confused for LAX!!!

It happens perhaps more often than you might think but not normally with B737 pilot's.

So what happens on the RT at that point.

ATC: Flight xx you're cleared to land on runway x

Pilot: I'm already on the ground

ATC: I can't see you where are you

Pilot: The aircraft with all the guns pointing at me.

ATC: Oh!

Had a "pilot" once who thought he was landing on a 2500' grass strip when in actuality he landed rwy 27 a 10000 x 150 rwy the active was 09 we F5s loaded with live bombs and 101's taking off 09 this dude lands and taxis right down the rwy into the QRA as if nothimg is wrong even the meatheads had their weapons out ready to cause havoc

It's happened since the start of aviation. I'm sure you all heard, but in WW1 the British designed the Handley Page 0/1500. It was a secret arcraft that was gonna be used for a covert bombing on German forces. The first 4 handleys were on route to a British aerodrome when the secret mission was blown when one of the pilots inadvertently landed at a German aerodrome.

When flying into airport where the terrain is void of landmarks and topographical features it could be done very easy, like in WW1. Today with the advent of handheld GPS at bare minimal, its inexcusable!
