Police are waiting for a woman, who allegedly abandoned a baby she'd just given birth to on a flight this morning, to recover from surgery before speaking to her.

A major investigation was launched following reports that the woman abandoned her newborn baby shortly after a Pacific Blue flight from Apia to Auckland landed about 5.20am today.

The woman, believed to be a Samoan citizen, and her child were taken to Auckland Middlemore Hospital later this morning.

One News said the woman was trying to exit the airport but had forgotten her passport. She sought help from authorities, who noticed she was pale and bloodstained. The newborn child was found shortly afterwards.

It quoted sources as saying that the child was born in the plane's toilet and then abandoned in a rubbish bin.

Counties Manukau police spokeswoman Ana-Mari Gates-Bowey confirmed an investigation into whether the child was abandoned was under way.

She said the woman was currently undergoing surgery and so we haven't been able to speak to her yet.

''Hopefully we can find out more about what happened then,'' she told NZPA.

TVNZ has quoted an Auckland Airport source as saying the baby was found by a cleaner in the rubbish compartment of one of the plane's toilets.

The mother is understood to be a 30-year-old Samoan woman.

An Auckland Airport spokeswoman said earlier today that: "A member of the Pacific Blue staff has found the baby after the flight had landed."

The mother and baby were taken to hospital by St John Ambulance in what the service described as a moderate condition.

A Middlemore Hospital spokeswoman said the pair were receiving treatment and both were well.

Pacific Blue spokesman Phil Boeyen confirmed a passenger had given birth on board flight DJ94 from Apia to Auckland. The flight – carrying 150 passengers – had arrived at 5.20am, he said.

"We are relieved to have been informed by Manukau Counties police that both mother and child are reunited, are well and are now being looked after in hospital."

Further inquiry was now a matter for the New Zealand police, he said.

Child, Youth and Family was notified and Immigration officials were checking if correct procedures were followed in Samoa about the visa process and whether she appeared pregnant, Radio New Zealand reported.

The Citizenship Act was amended in 2005 so that any child born after January 1, 2006 is a New Zealand citizen by birth only if at least one parent is a New Zealand citizen or entitled to reside in New Zealand indefinitely.

If she didn't want to raise the baby herself, there are more humane (and legal!) ways to get rid of it. Does NZ have that humanitarian law (forget the name of it at the moment) where a mother can bring a newborn to a police or fire station and leave them in their care with no questions asked or repercussions?
