Fw 190 cockpit

Hi all, a very basic question: could have an Fw 190 the cockpit closed not being the pilot inside it?, in other words: can the cockpit be closed from out of the plane?.

I would assume so as you see plenty of pics of the aircraft with the canopy closed without a pilot. Now locking it might be a different matter.

I've observed that too but have found nothing about an external lock.

According to the aircraft manual, there is a button on the right hand side, which the groundcrew used to open and close the canopy

The hood was opened and closed from the inside by turning a crank handle. From the outside it was done by simultaneously depressing and turning a spring-loaded,notched,thumb screw positioned over the crank axle on the right side of the cockpit (at least on later versions).

Here a pic of the button mentioned. We excavated this Fw190A-8 in 2006. The a/c belonged most likely to JG-6 and crashed during operation Market Garden. Left pic is the stencil Haube Öffnen/ Hier drücken( Open canopy/ Press here), right pic is the windshield frame just as we found it.

This a/c crashed in a low angle and was spread out all over the field. At the end of the debris field we found the BMW 801 engine and mounts, the pilots seat, canopy parts and forward nose and fuselage parts...so mainly the front of the a/c. I'm almost ready with the restauration of the canopy windshield parts....the left hand side rail in which the canopy travels was found also and could be mounted back to the front windshield frame again. Included is a link to the webpage with more pics of this recovery. The recovery of a Focke Wulf Fw190A-8, crashed near Groessen.

You're Welcome. Hopefully a new dig this summer. Also a Fw 190A-8. Still in negotiations with the landowner...not the easiest person but I'm confident that we'll get permission.
