Exclamation Interior of PTO P-38 Lightnings

    Greetings, fellow modelers:

I've just started building the Academy 1/72 scale P-38J. It wil be a Dobodura-based plane in Olive Drab over Neutral Grey. The question I have is: What is the correct color for the landing gear door interiors for these P-38s as they were in early to mid 1943?

    Thanks for looking,

    Pete L.

    Hi Pete

The way I understand it, Neutral Gray from factory, or possibly natural aluminium. If the aircraft was not shipped properly and corrosion was evident on reassembly, it could have received coats of primer or interior green. Anything is possible, but I would go with Neutral Gray.

    Cheers

    Peter

Yep, I agree. As mentioned, and the same in the ETO, the insides of the doors were often given a coat of Interior Green, Green or Yellow Zinc Chromate, at a Base Air Depot or in the field.

Another question about the OD/NG P-38s in the Pacific Theatre. Were the wing tanks NG or all metal?
