| Senior Member | Exhaust pipe reality? Any help here would be much appreciated... I have been revisited the P-40E, and spent a good amount of time getting the exhaust pipes just perfect - only to find that every one else does them different! So... I think mine are right according to photos of actual aircraft... but am I missing something? Was there a 'switch over' to the 'round' from the 'flat' and does anyone know more about it?

| Nice pics PB ! Clave...just for you, I've even include a shot taken at Oskhosh back 05, showing both types side by side to just to 'un-clarify' the matter even more !. It should be possible to confirm A/C No's of those two Hawks and see when they where manufactured, to see if that helps your query ? I think all thats missing from your profiles are the ubiquitous tennis ball exhaust bungs ! Nice work, keep it up

| Senior Member | Great pictures everyone! Thank you. Now I can see that there are two types, which makes me even more curious in a way - I know this is the case on Spitfires too, but it seems that every colour profile I have seen has the 'round' type, but the black-and-white plans show the 'flat' type, which matches the photos 99% of the time... OK - I have trawled through the drawings and found four types, so here's a *definitive* list: P-40 Exhausts: P-40A: Round (tilted up) Tomahawk IIA: Flat (tilted up) Tomahawk IIA: Round (tilted up) P-40C: Round (tilted up) Tomahawk IIB: Round (tilted up) P-40D: Round (straight back) P-40E: Flat (straight back) P-40F: Flat (straight back) P-40K: Flat (straight back) P-40M: Flat (straight back) P-40N: Flat (straight back) So, there you have it (until disproved) I will get back to my profiling now, happy in the knowledge that I might be right - at least for the time being...
