| Took the family to the Hawk Conservancy today. Spent the day ducking with the raptors in free flight, skimming....and I mean skimming (as in about three inches !!!!)...over our heads during the displays. Imagine sitting down on a bench and having upwards of 5 Vultures and 6 Red tailed Kites flying directly over your heads....incredible. The Eagles where just soo damn majestic, the Secretary bird killing the rubber snake was fascinating to watch...and the Owls...some with a three foot wingspan, flying absolutely silently. This was a fantastic day out...cant believe this is only the second time I've ever been there in the past 27 yeasr...and its only 12 ...yes TWELVE... miles away. As Arnie would say "I'lll be back !". What I did find out today is that my zoom....a Canon 75-300mm...is cr*p. It just doesnt seem able to keep up with continous shooting and I've had to trash round 75 pics today that were out of focus. I'm not impressed as I've been using it for airshow shots and I havent been able to produce the kind of results that I was getting with my old 200mm zoom, and now I know why. Check out the last pic of the Owl....is that 'prop blur' ?

| Great shots, all of them! The Owl is an excellent shot and lol @ "prop blur"! I have to say that my fav pic is the Secretary bird photo! Not sure why, but the Secretary bird has always reminded me of a Griffon for some reason.

| "World Traveller" ![]() | Nice shots! If it is this Canon 75-300mm it is known to be a bit like that - Canon EOS EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Zoom Lens Look at getting a lens with IS for airshows (or at least a quicker one). I have been using this lens (http://www.calumetphoto.co.uk/item/321-637C/) since I got my camera with good results, similar lens but with IS.

| Great shots Gary, I agree with you on that lens. I took some shots today and`got a little blur. I might get the same lens or the 250, with IS. Cheers and don't stand to close to those birds with a sandwich in your hand.

| Cheers guys, much appreciated. Ref the Secretary bird....he's called Dave by the way !... has a fascinating way of attacking its prey (snake). It stomps on the snakes head until its dead. I could hear Dave's feet hammering onto the rubber snake from around 40 feet away. The 'handler was explaining that Dave has injured the trainers occassionaly in the past when they didnt get out of the way of him doing his Kung Foo moves. They desrcibe him as an Eagle on stilts !

| What an awesome bird, and you can simply tell it has some real power behind those legs! Thanks for the extra shots! (And is there any coincidence that such a cool bird like that, is named Dave?)

| Hi guys. Back from Cyprus and a load of piccies to share. While I was there, when walking through the accommodation to the kitchen, I saw a bit of movement out of the corner of my eye and stopped and had a closer look.... I have to say that over the past few months I have seen some rather extraordinary sights in the world of insects and have been able to take some shots of the incredible goings on. First pic, is from Cyprus and shows the object that caught my eye. Now I know that an ant is a strong little dude but this one was stretching that a bit far. He was...on his own... literaly dragging this dead Hornet across the carpet in one of the hallways. Thats about the equivilant of me walking upto a big-rig, and dragging it sideways....like thats ever going to happen !. Incredible power !!!. Oh, and the Ant didnt kill the Hornet, just nicking it for the larder. The next few shots where taken a few months ago whilst digging on a crash site. I put the trowel down and this little grass-hopper jumps on the blade. so I get the camera out and then dont believe what I'm seeing. This grass-hopper stays absolutely still while a small spider, walks upto it, then proceeds to clamber all over it before walking off in . Grass-hopper doesnt even bat an eyelid !!!
