Gettysburg!! Wahoo! - Aircraft of World War II

Ok, so I was in Gettysburg since Thursday and got back just now. I got 7 of my favorite pictures sorted and ready for posting.

Gettysburg has been referred to as a 'mistake' because no general meant to fight there. The battle was, believe it or not, started over shoes that Confederates desperately needed. In the middle of the night on July 1st, Confederate soldiers were spotted moving towards Gettysburg. Calvary was sent to protect the town but were desperately outnumbered by advancing Confederate troops. The first two days the Confederates held Gettysburg while Union troops were on the highland and were formed into a fish hook shaped defense. The were trying to defend the South Eastern part of Gettysburg in open fields. They retreated and they took positions on Cult's hill, Little Round top and Big round top. They held the high ground. The Confederate generals believed they had the Union on there last leg and began an artillery barrage. 150 Confederate guns opened up and about 90 Union guns responded. One of the biggest artillery battles the States have every seen took place.

The Confederates believed they had destroyed the rebels and were ordered to attack. 12,000 soldier in a line 1 mile across marched towards the hill. The casualties on both sides were enormous. Gettysburg was the turning point of the war. The Union had held out...

The Photos

Some photos are taken in the open field, where on the second day the Union tried to defend. There is a picture or two of buildings that were converted to hospitals for the wounded.

There are some taken on a hill, that was Big Round Top where the Union troops held off the Rebels. The overgrown, dilapidated, and swamped area is known as the 'slaughter pen.' 1000-1500 men of the 42nd and 44th Alabama regiments went to make a sneak attack at night on the Union troops and were mowed down. The pictures were terrifying, you couldn't even step without stepping on a body. It is about a quarter of the size of a football field. Right next to it, is Devil's Den where the same thing happened, the Rocky area.

Thanks TO and Sys! Sys, the pics from the hill were from Big Round top where Pickett's charge was focused on. The ones in the open fields, I am trying to remember the name!

More.

Picture 1: The hotel...

Picture 2: If you look VERY closely there is a rainbow.

The guns were all guns that recorded a kill at Gettysburg.

Cannon balls were the first 4 to shoot at Fort Sumter.

The picture is of the field in which I forget its name.

The hill is Big Round Top.

The pictures and diorama mix is called a cyclorama. The paint is hand painted and took 6 months.

Great stuff Harrison. Glad you have enjoyed yourself while you were there. If I ever come to the States one day, Gettysburg is definatelly the place I would like to visit.

Be sure to post photos of the field where Picket's charge took place. Would like to see that...

Ok. I have more pics but thought I'd get what I bought out of the way first.

I got 4 books, a shell-bullet-casing, and since I was in Gettysburg I had to get something Civil War! So I got A bullet from a rifle that was shot, and that wasn't shot....

The shell, can anyone identify it? It's marked on the bottom "MM MK 4, 1944"

Purchases ran me all of 30 dollars.

I was there about eight years ago. VERY....awe-inspiring? humbling?....place to visit. There's a hush that lays over the battlefields that just has to be experienced. I'd love to go back some time, glad you got the opportunity to spend a few days, Harrison!
