It just came on the news here that a bunch of weirdos from Vermont wanted to separate from the US.
I don't really get it... Vermont is a wonderful state in one of the best countries in the world. Why do they want to separate ? They even have a web site : Second Vermont Republic |

Country: | I actually read one of the articles - Not bus as usual anymore. It's more of the same anti-american, anti-british, anti-bush, anti-catholic, anti-israel BULLSH*T that flows out of extreme liberals' mouths all throughout the US on a daily basis.
I'll just leave it at that.

Country: | VT Republic, LOL Hi folks,
I live here in Vermont and trust me even though we have the legal right to seperate ourselvesfrom the rest of the US. It won`t happen. Vermont is too dependant on the Federal Govt. money to ever do it no matter the reason. Most Vermonters are pretty laid back individuals and don`t care about some malarky that outa state agitators try and sell them. Now when Gay Marraige was passed it was a national lobbiest group that did the research and found out that VT has low turn outs at the polls and they managed to convince all the liberals that have moved here in recent years to vote for gay marriage.
Well that may have happened but it does not really affect anyones wallet. Splitting from the US would cause some big money problems here. And when it comes to money, even the outa state interests can`t pull the wool over a Vermonters eyes.

| Does not seems a serious threat...
Well, at least they are different from Spanish Catalan and Italian Lega that want to separate because 'we are richer than the rest and don't want to stay with the poors' or Spanish Basque and French Savoy.
What said by JG57 is interesting: is it only Vermont or does all the States have a formal legal right to separate from the USA?
Although I personally agree with their points 2, 3 and 6 it seems to me that their manifest is really naive.

JH57_Rall | 7th Article? That's a fundamental principle of democracy - yet I don't think it would go uncontested by the federal govt if the method of change Vermont sought was secession. I have a bunch of family in Vermont (Manchester Ctr) and Bennington - it's a beautiful place - if it was on the ocean, I'd seriously consider moving there after I'm done. People are extremely nice as well.

We don`t have an ocean, but Lake Champlain hasa lot to offer. And real Vermonters are a nice lot. Chances are the people that posted that web site are not from here. Just some more lunatic flatlanders tryin to change Vermont.

PS: I just sent them an email,
Here`s a copy,
Okay,
Where are you people from, and what makes you think that Vermont could stand on its own without Federal support. What fantasy are you living in. What do you plan on using as a substitute for Federal aid. Do you have a foreign Govt that is gonna foot the medical bills and the food stamp program? Who is going to take care of our roads? What about fish and Game who will pay the rangers salaries? What will we do with the poor that receive SSI and Social Security. And what about the students? Who will pay the tuitions for the underprivileged?
I know we will just put them on trains and send them out of our state. Or maybe we can fire up some big ovens.
You folks are kidding yourselves if you think you can pull this off. I think you are probably misinformed about the whole thing. But then again It is a free country. Just don`t be surprised when it all comes crumbling down around you.
By the way did you know that Bush just signed a bill that makes it easy for him to declare marshal law and move federal troops anywhere he wants? Boy I would`nt want to be wearing an anti Govt jacket when the GI`s role into town.
