$600 US Govt rebate

Dont get me wrong, I can use the $600 but I'd rather see it go towards infrastructure repair (Dams, Highways, Bridges) , social security or alternative fuels research.

I dont see how this helps the country. Do they expect everybody to take the $600 and go buy a new TV? I think it's shortsighted and simplistic!

Taxpayers would get checks under economic stimulus plan - CNN.com

# Deal would give taxpaying individuals $600, couples filing jointly $1,200, sources say
# Parents may get $300 more per child, sources say
# GOP will allow lesser rebates for people who don't pay income taxes, sources say
# Democrats won't push food stamp aid hike, extension of unemployment benefits

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- American taxpayers would get checks of several hundred dollars from the federal government under a plan to stimulate the economy, sources said Thursday.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is the administration's point person for the economic stimulus plan.

Congressional leaders of both parties were talking with their membership to sell the plan, sources said.

Sources on Capitol Hill and at the Treasury Department said congressional and White House negotiators agreed upon checks of $600 per individual and $1,200 per couple who paid income tax and who filed jointly.

People who did not pay federal income taxes but who had earned income of more than $3,000 would get checks of $300 per individual or $600 per couple.

A Democratic aide and Republican aide said there will be an additional amount per child, which could be in the neighborhood of $300.

Those who earn up to $75,000 individually or up to $150,000 as a couple will be eligible for the payments, said Republican and Democratic sources familiar with the tentative deal.

Checks could be in taxpayers' mailboxes by June, according to an Associated Press report.

The agreement in principle includes a robust package of business incentives.

The Treasury Department still must analyze the numbers to determine the price tag of the stimulus package, sources said.

To get to the agreement, Democrats dropped calls for increases in food stamps and an extension of unemployment compensation. Republicans agreed to allow people who pay Social Security taxes but not income taxes to get the checks, sources said.

An announcement on the plan could come Thursday afternoon, the two sources said.

Aides in both parties said Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has been working aggressively in recent days as he tries to make progress before House Republicans head out of Washington for a legislative retreat at the end of the week.

The stimulus package may face resistance from fiscal conservatives in both parties over worries that it would increase the federal debt. The talks are occurring as auditors report that the federal deficit -- the difference between what the government takes in and what it spends -- is increasing.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated Wednesday the deficit would jump to $250 billion, mainly because of a weakening economy. That estimate does not include any additional spending that would be part of a stimulus package.

The proposal is intended to address economic worries stemming from a worldwide credit crunch created by the mortgage crisis and plunging stock markets. The president proposed the package last week. Video Watch a debate on whether the U.S. is heading into a recession »

Officials in both parties credited Paulson, the former Goldman Sachs executive known for a shrewd grasp of the markets, with pushing the package aggressively.

"He's been on the phone with practically every member of Congress -- some of them a few times," one Senate Republican aide said. "He's not fooling around." E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend

I want dams that aren't exfoliateing cement, roads widened and bridges maintained.
I want to alleviate dependence on fossil fuels!

The Hydroelectric system in the Central Sierra Nevada boasts an extensive network of dams... all constructed 70 years ago and all showing their age.

I think that most of use want conserivate economics and the intrastructure repaired but look at the group that is running the country. I never did understand how people that are not paying taxes are able to get a rebate for money that they did pay in. It is all vodoo economics anyway. The people in power always vote themself more power or money.

When Reagan and Papa Bush were trying to get the nomination for the Republican Party, Bush described Reagan's supply side economic plan as vodoo economics, something that would only work with the use of evil magic.
The term was used for a while to descibe economic plans that did not look right. I guess the term is not used anymore. That was a long time ago. I do not understand how people are allowed to get earned income credit for taxes that they did pay or how people think the showed get a rebate for taxes they did not pay. Being a single white male with no houses and no dependents. I have always wanted to know why I do not get any tax deductions. I pay in but no deductions and people that pay in less or nothing are getting refunds. I must be the evil white imperialist that everone os afraid of...lol.

How about giving rebates as a percentage of taxes paid in only to those who pay taxes. You make less than $10k and pay no taxes... you get nada, zilch, nil.

Congress fought with that the last time. It seems that it is not fair that the working poor do not get a refund while the rich can get money back, so the low income gets a refund but those in the middle get little of anything. Same ol', same ol'. Yes I am getting negative in my middle age.

Why a rebate at all? I mean, if its my money they're holding, just don't tax me and take it in the first place.

oh, forgot, have to pay for those earmarks.
