You'll laugh when I tell you about this five grand holiday the missus has booked its a luxury grand tour of Italy all by high speed train from London via Paris to Rome,Venice and Florence with 4 night stop overs in each city. After 30 odd years on the track it will be the first time I've used a train for a holiday. |

Back and forth, all over the place, all night long. Took one from Strasburg to Milan and the only person who was sleeping was the conductor. And that pinhead was the one with everyone's passport! |

Country: | A vacation on a bloody Train no bloody thanks. I work with them day in day out not going on a holiday on one of them trains no matter how fast or comfy they are suppose to be. Last time i did the train sleeper trick journey from Sydney to Brisbane by train. sleeper was comfortable alright but every time bloody train went around a curve you could feel yourself slipping from one end of bed to another. put me in mind of a marble on a flat table |

Country: | I agree, can't say I would do a holiday trip on a train. Though the boss (wife)might have other ideas.

Country: | Adler, train travel is a blast. I agree with ya'. Great to just sit back and watch the world go by. Also, bringing your own beer and swilling away as the train clacks along is fun. I miss that about Europe. Great train rides, beer and (back when you could), smoking a cigar in a compartment. Great rides!
But sleeping on a train is a bear. It sucks. However, it might be easier if you're younger than 25 or so. Or just used to sleeping on trains. Trying to do it as a newbie is a bear. Up, down, side to side and (like Emac says above) every curve makes you feel like you're about to go off the bed and out the window. WHOOOOAAAAA! |

WHOOOOAAAAA! | I have never had a problem sleeping on a train, I can pretty much sleep anywhere. I remember a few years ago my unit went to Hungary to do some training and even though we were taking a few of our helicopters to the country for the training we had to load up most of our vehicals and stuff on the train. Each company had to provide a soldier and an NCO to ride on the Train for security. I was one of the ones chosen and even though I would have preferred to crew one of the birds in, I figured it might be neat.
I really enjoyed it, the train went south through Germany and then through Austria and into Hungary. All in all because the Train had to go slow because of the equipment and then the specific border stop times because of Customs it took about 36 hours to get there.
We had a blast and got to get out at the train at the stops and have some fun in Wien and Budapest.
The only sucky thing about it, was that it was an older train with no air conditioning so at night it was really hot on the train. Oh well I got to fly my bird back to Germany a few weeks later instead of ride on the train.

Country: | Adler they maybe fun riding on a train once in awhile but when you work with the blasted things day in day out, Trust me they soon lose their appeal and greatly so and some of the things i have seen on trains, one wonders who let the dogs out and why?. though I do miss watching the Army load M113 APC's on train wagons at Roma Street Goods Yard years ago to be transported up to Tin Can Bay region in Central Queensland. But those days are gone now as the Good Yards closed up 10 years ago or more. I have seen some really strange and unusual members of the public that use train travel for inner city and long distance purposes since joining Queensland Railways and more so since I have become a Train Crew Guard. Train Crew Guards are a little like a Train Conductor in a sense. No we are not armed. and that is more the pity, but just as well, probarly by this time would have shot some pillock that managed to annoy me hahaha |
