Anti-Ballistic missiles in Poland and Czech

Hi everbody! Its me again.

Anyway, I heard that US are planning to deploy Anti-Ballistic missiles in Poland and Chech Republic. They're saying it will defend Europe from N Korean and Iranian nukes or something like that.

So, what do know about it and what are your thoughts on the subject?
Don't you think it's a little bit unwise building ABM right near Russia? This might actually lead to another arms race.

Yes I have heard about this. Germany has also announced they would like to have some of those bases in Germany as well.

Putin has allready said that it will cause another arms race if the US does this. However the Russians dont have the money to keep up in an arms race so it does not matter.

I dont understand why Russia is so damned worried about it anyhow, they are defensive missiles and can not be used for an attack.

They think that those ABM's there to shoot down Russian missiles. This can potentially undermine the MAD principle and give an upper hand to US in possible nuclear war.

I've just read that Russian General Staff said that they might consider to withdraw from Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. Thats the treaty that banned ground based small and intermediate ranged missiles like SS-20 and Pershing II. Thats not good.

If Russia has no expansion motives, this shouldn't be a problem. I think there is still cold war paranoia on both sides which I hope goes away when the current leadership in both countries change.

I think the Russians want to return to the old ways in my opinion. Hell Putin practically still runs the country like he it is still Communism. Hell I think that it is still Communism just labeled elsewise.

FBJ is right if the Russians did not have the desire to still expand east then they have nothing to fear and these missles do no effect them. The US is not going to start a war with Russia...

Im afraid that new Russian president will be Putins protege and nothing will change in their policy, as for USA - I dont know.

BTW what kind of missiles will be deployed in Europe and how are they supposed to operate? Are those conventional ABMs or nuclear?

As far as I know they are conventional.

I don't think they want to rebuild Soviet Union I think they like the way it is now. State capitalism would be more apropriate. They wouldn't mind becoming a superpower once again though.

You're right at this moment these missiles cannot stop Russian attack/counter-attack. But they might think that US will build more ABMs around the world and don't forget their nuclear arsenal is shrinking rapidly, so in the end they will be unable to retaliate to hypothetical US attack.
And you will be surprised how many Russians ARE covinced that USA will attack Russia as soon as US will be sure that they can win such war.
