| Very smart actually. Alberta knows how to manage their resources better than most (i.e. oil, which as you know is considerable in Alberta.), and deal with Ottawa in order to get the most for their people. They also have the best welfare system in the country. By "best" I mean a welfare system that works the way welfare was intended to. They will only shell out the welfare cheques for a maximum of six months, so you'd better have some sort of work by then. They're the only province in Canada that does it too. It discourages the lazy slugs who'd rather just sit on their asses collecting "pogey", while you and I work to keep beer in their fridge. That goes on a lot in the Atlantic provinces, and it largely has to do with inept, corrupt, gutless politicians who won't rock the boat a little.
What meager resources we do have aren't being managed very well either. The two worst ones for that as far as I can tell are Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. New Brunswick seems to be a bit better at management, plus they seem to have a largely more progressive attitude when it comes to change and development. They're actually trying. And what can you really say about PEI? It's a big red mudflat where potatoes are grown. They depend almost entirely on tourism for their provincial revenues and they don't even do that very well. |
