Country: | French is back in the State of the Maine ! Greetings ladies and gentlemen.
I just heard that on the news... I knew that French could go in the Middle-West at their own risks, but I didn't know that an eastern state like the Maine was stigmatizing French !
Here is the New-York Times' repport : http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/04/us...erland&emc=rss
What are your thoughts about that ? |

Country: | I think it's pretty cool as long as some PQ @ssholes don't show up and start telling these folks that they are opressed and crap like that...

Country: | Woah... It was like a LSD shot ! You gave me a serious bad trip.
Maybe that's the third thing the PQ army will do if ever the province becomes independent... "TO DO LIST :
1 - Invade Labrador to take back the great electricity capabilities of the dams there.
2 - Invade New-Brunswick to liberate Acadians from the oppressing English grasp.
3 - Invade the Maine to liberate the Acadians from the oppressing capitalists and ennemy of freedom (yeah, sure ) Americans."
Woah... Very bad trip... |

Country: | LOL! I've been to Maine and I hate to say there may be some that will buy that line!!!
I hope the "Maine Francaphones" (I made up a new name) align themselves with the French Canadians of new Brunswick rather than those from, well you know!!!!

Country: | The Acadians of Nova Scotia and PEI hate the sovereigntists of Québec as much as the New Brunswick Acadians do. They think of them as just a bunch of yo-yos. Pretty accurate I think.
To think that Lévesque was originally from New Brunswick.

Country: | Anyone remember DeGualle?
At Expo '67, this visiting Frenchman declared "Vive le Quebec! Libre!"
...thus stirring the already smouldering embers of separatist unrest in Quebec, and igniting the FLQ into terrorist tactics. All Canadians should be very thankful to this guy. |

Country: | I have a serious question to you Canadians. What do you think the chances are of Quebec becoming independent in this generation?
My personal opinion is that this will happen soon as the last referendum was already a close call.

Kris | Sets a dangerous precedent, however. How far do you take sovereignty in breaking down a nation/state? Where does the line get drawn?

Country: | Maine speaking French. Would anyone really notice? Nothing has gone up there since the Revolution. Big state, 1.2 million people and lots of trees. Spend more time probably talking to themselves than anyone else. French, English, whatever. If it gets them through their long winters without a trip to the looney bin, have at it. |

Even if a referendum went in favour of separation, they would have to be lunatics to do it. Considering the amount of money the rest of the country throws at Quebec in terms of federal transfer payments (with about a 20% increase just recently announced in the last federal budget), why would they want to?
I gotta hand it to their politicians- they bend the rest of the country over a barrel with these threats of separation and the Feds seem to have adopted a policy of appeasement. Personally I'd like to see them remain a part of the country but it's costly to keep 'em.
If they did go their own way, I'm sure France would be very helpful in getting "la belle Province" set up financially. |

Country: | Farley, why do you want to keep them? Is it because you love your country as it is?
And do most non-French speaking Canadians feel the same way?

Country: | Being from Belgium you also have the same sort of stuff occuring there with the Flemish and the Waaloons the recent polls show only 17% in Quebec pro separation at this time but it changes as often as i Change my socks , but in recent elections in quebec the pro separtist party ended up in 3rd place

Certainly there is an element of patriotism in my stance. There are other factors- the isolation of the Maritimes from the rest of Canada being a big one, as well as the almost certain economic disruption.
I also know many people in Quebec who love being Canadians, and are proud of who they are. |
