The day of the quiet "Don" pseudo business type, pay off the politicians, have been replaced by more rambunctious Russian, South American or Gansta type mobster who doesn't have the savvy or intelligence to keep a low profile and quietly "buy" power as did the Lucianos, Gambinos, Marchellos, or Giancanas from the Irish politicians... (sigh) the good ole days of corruption....

The U.S actually installed the Italian Mafia in Sicily, after the Allied Invasion (Operation Husky, 1943), to quell any civil unrest. They had them all locked up in the U.S but released them to aid the war effort. The one good thing the fascists had done was rid Italy of gang warfare, and mafia corruption (installed their own instead). The U.S come along and bring back organised crime to Italy. One of the worst things that the U.S.A did during World War II, in my opinion.

How is it that the Italians ended gang violence? what steps did it take? Its very hard to beleive that any country no matter how powerfull can completely remove any type of gang violenceand not only that the Mafia had been around in Sicily and the States way before the second world war.
