Country: | I consider myself a conservative but I do have problems with some Republican positions as well as political parties. Here's something to think about...
Well the people have spoken and we now see a shift of power in Washington (so much for those who think that Bush was going to "seize" power like Hitler) - our process works despite what a few conspiracy fruitcakes think. There are a number of seemingly moderate and conservative democrats who have defeated Republican incumbents, especially in the middle of the country - lets hope they keep a course of less taxes, less government, a solution to the Iraq problem, a smart war on terrorism and allow investment opportunities to ensure the economy will continue to grow. At the same time its lesson learned to the Republicans (and Bush) who allowed an "overstay" in Iraq and were the subject of several sleazy scandals which is probably the second reason why the Dems have control of the house (and may control the Senate). Time in power corrupts and this is a fine example of it. But I remember 1996 - this seems like deja vu. It was the Dem's who were on firing line, people were DISGUSTED with the hidden liberal agenda displayed by many in congress as well as high taxes and growing government. The Dems have the power to make their presence a somewhat permanent fixture if they stay away from raising taxes, gun control, nationalized health care, diminishing the military and other left wing policies that will only piss off mainstream America. (I have worries about Nancy Pelosi, she's a left wing liberal and a flat out fruitcake, but only her only her mouth will eventually doom her and her party, but only time will tell).
As the pendulum swings, we have to once again ask ourselves "Is this worth it or maybe we should start looking at the alternative candidates who cater to the needs of the people rather than their political party."

Country: | Oh Lordy. The Third Party discussion. Perhaps our European friends can enlighten us of the multiparty system and its benefits. I personally have agonized over this issue and believe that you must vote for the party platform that MOST suits your ideals.
I must confess that I did not vote strict Republican lines, though you could call me a staunch conservative. I did vote for Adam Smith - D for House Rep. He has a proven moderate track record and tends to vote conservative with respect to fiscal responsibility, 2nd Amendment rights, and the war on terrorism.
I do agree with you FBJ that at times it does seem that the Republocrats are one and the same. My biggest beef with Bush is his supposedly conservative decision making has resulted in the largest gov't job creation since FDR (ie TSA and Homeland Security). A true conservative would have established roles, responsiblities, guidelines and accountability and privatized that effort. Oh well.
But voting third party seems to just muddy the water. Washington DC corrupts. And politics corrupt absolutely.
Well I'm off to ride something naked. Let's see if she's in the mood...

Country: | Liberatarians ? well I am an independent at heart in truth from way back when, actually when Nixon got the boot
Joe it is quite correct, there are "funny" folk on both side of the two main parties, but sadly for us in Oregon when it comes to the nationals we are one of the last states to have our votes in for the count, and with that the dice had already been rolled and the die cast, so many of us here in our state say "why bother? " and do you guys see why through misrepresentation, why the crap we want to form our own state from Redding, Cali north to Roseburg, OR.
the grand state of Jefferson ! wonder what it would do to the country except throw it topsy turvy cause you can bet other oversized states would feel the same way ......
yikes sorry a bit over the top and OT |

Country: | On that note of political parties Joe - I agree. I've said for years the only way to solve this bi-party system in the US is to introduce strong campaign budget limits. Fact is that to run for office you must accumulate millions... and that's to even be recognized as running - not even to have a fair shake. I've heard this issue getting some press lately, even in mainstream such as Fox News. Only thing is that this requires repubs and dems to voluntarily yield their deathgrip on american politics - which I don't believe is going to happen.
I'm very happy that Lieberman won - Lamont made me nautious with the way he attempted to purchase a senate seat with millions of his personal monies...

Country: | Already proposed here Erich. The wonderful state of Eastern Washington. If you look at the voting lines, you will see that west of the Cascades pure liberalism. East its virtually all conservative. Folks in the east are sick and tired of supporting new stadiums, failed transit projects and other fiscal failures. The folks in the west claim those in the east are subsidized by the wests big cities and tax base and should shut their traps. Both sides hate each other.

Country: | Well I won't vouch for all of them being very smart, but they are mostly hard working farmer types. I'd heard Eastern Washington State, Grant State and some others. Never gonna happen.

Country: | A lot of states break down into regions. In MO the dem stronghold is KC and St Louis, in NJ the dems dominate the urban areas, and a lot of other more rural areas are pretty conservative. We'll just gerrymander the districts to yield a more favorable result!

Country: | Term limits! There is no reason why rich professional politicians (i.e. Kennedy, Kerry, Rockefeller) needs to hold office for 15 or more years. I could see some rich guy wanting to get involved in politics for a short while but folks like this need to go and they exist in both parties. I'm more pissed about rich Dems riding in office for years and years, especially when they say they represent the "common man." Christ, the last time fat @ss Kennedy worked his @ss off is when he swam from his sinking car!
