That was every Popes solution in the Middle-Ages ... and they did do a pretty good job when the Crusaders weren't arguing amongst themselves.

I came here to post that story, lucky. This is absolute insanity. This and that Danish cartoonist getting death threats...

Haha Flyboy, write that up and put it on Myspace or something, I'm sure that teacher would appreciate the attention shifting a bit

Now that I like. Let all that hatred for mankind and his accomplishments be flayed upon the backs of fellow countrymen.

Oh... and all women. Can't let them out from under the thumb.

We should hang bags of pig guts and entrails on every HumVee, tank and bus over there. Then see how many suicide bombers go off. They wouldn't know what to do.

As far as blame, I thought we were pushing for a Global economy, global trading, global friendship and hand clapping. I would think part of that is getting involved in the politics. Or is neutrailty the future?

I think you are starting to figure it out. I wasn't against the Iraq war, but your president really lost me when he wanted to bring freedom & democracy to the Muslin world. I'm sorry, but you might as well try to teach Shakespere to the monkeys in the zoo. When these people go bananas over a teddy bear there is something very wrong with their thinking. I have a feeling that once they have freedom & democracy the Iraqis will vote for some radical jihadist gang. The US will probably just end up having to bomb them back to the stone age anyways.

Sorry for my un-PC post but I don't have alot of confidence in nation building in the muslim world.

What I find most disturbing is how you guys always talk about "those people" and "the muslims" etc, just as if they are all the same. That teddy-bear incident gets blown widely out of proportion in such a way that it is generalized over the entire muslim world.
So Matt may be right about me being naive about international politics (though I've read my share of books on the subject while I was studying international affairs and conflict management) but generalizing people also shows a rather naive world view. As if all westerners are the same. Or do you guys love to be called French?

Many of the different factions hate each other almost as much as they hate us...

It's a culture of revenge, grudges, religious fundamentalism and inferiority complexes fueled by thousands of years of of seething rage.

but...

I have a deep respect for the historical achievements and discoveries of that part of the world.

Me too. How can we ignore the advances in food market bombing efficiency, beheadings with single strokes, oppression of women rights, invention of the burkha, miniaturization of personal explosives, development of low grade missile munitions made from garden utensils, successful political negotiations while maintaining the underlying agenda of giving up nothing, magnanimous emotional manipulation of the freeworld press, etc.

I hear ya comiso...

Unctious people they are. Unctious.

I take your point, however.... Unlike other "fringe" groups, (example: neo nazi's, violent free trade protesters, those nuts that protest military funerals) which are CLEARLY small wacko fringe elements without popular support - in muslim countries you will get many 10,000's of people marching to demand the death (or beheading!) of Danish cartoonists & British teachers. It is disturbing to me that such a large # of supposedly "ordinary" people can have these kind of fanatical views.

I'm afraid we may have to wait a few more centuries for them to leave the middle age mentality behind

You are right Freebird. The north american countries are good, giving, and caring countries that are willing to contribute to societies that are participants in world freedom and potential for democracy.

However, most hardcore muslim/islamist countries are oppressive, intolerant and unforgiving of contrary thoughts. Disgusting. Disgusting compared to most western societies that tolerate, allow, and embrace religion/race/creed/economic status and encourage assimilation. Islam is isolationist.
