Country: | The Soviet Union wouldn't have just dropped the nuke on North America, they would have sent a fair few into Europe as well. At the height of the Cold War the Soviet Union and United States alone had enough nuclear warheads to destroy the world six times over! And that doesn't include the nuclear weapons of Europe.
Yes, as much as many people don't realise most of Europe did, and still does, have nuclear weapons.

Country: | No I'm not. I still don't see how that makes Europe safer. Europe was less paranoid but no less (or more) safer than the U.S. I don't get you at all...but okay.

Country: | It just seems since "The Wall" fell and the Soviet Union went away, terrorism took off, we had the conflict in the Balkns, and other stuff like the Romanian Revolution. It just seems none of that would of happened during the Cold War years, not to say the world was any safer!

Country: | But perhaps just a bit more stable in some respects. If anything, the constant spectre of nuclear war with the Warsaw Pact or NATO (depending on your position) tended to keep most of the pond scum in check. No one wanted to piss off the major players in those days. |

Country: | Oh that's what you were getting at! I understand now. It was - the Soviet Union kept a lot of those Eastern Europe and South Asian freaks in check.

Country: | Just look at Tito. He was not the best leader but he kept Yugoslavia together as soon as he was gone, it all went to hell. Bosnia, then Kosovo and who knows what else will happen.

Country: | You could say the same about Stalin, and many old f*ucking reds in the former Soviet block say it. In a dictatorship, there's allways some order, but for which costs? I think better they kill each others from their free will, then being killed by someone else like sheep. |

Country: | It was better with the Soviet Union because the fact is, they aren't killing each other. They're killing Western civilians.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no pinko, but what do think would of happened if Chechen Muslims set off suicide bombs in Moscow in 1980?
Old "Bresnie" would of tested his newest nukes above ground - guess where!

Country: | Hmm, maybe not though - the only thing that is at all interesting about Chechnya is the pipeline that goes through it and the oil fields around Grozny. Nobody in the USSR would have wanted those to glow in the dark for the next 10,000 years, or indeed seen the production and distribution facilities - especially the cracking towers - destroyed.
Not to say that 'Ol' Eyebrows' wouldn't have pulled out all the stops - full on conventional bombing, gas, and biological agents, as well as the Stalingrad Mk II storming of Grozny. The last part which indeed happened under Yeltsin's time in power. |
