I do think however that the 2 things that are lacking the most in the US public school system are Geography and History.
I remember when I attended public schools in N. Carolina Geography touched a little on outside the US but for the most part was left to N. American Geography and the same for History. It was basically History that the US was involved in. My complaint by this is History is a lot older than the US...

Country: | Standard NJ public high school ed is world history 1st year, then US I, jr year US II. There was no mandatory history for senior level. I agree, though, that that extra year would be better spent for history rather than cooking and all the other nonsense electives in US schools.

| i once had the chance of becoming first hand witness of some "prominent" attorney at law in NYC referring to the loyal ally of the USA in the war against terror as "the Federal Republic of England".
Utterly brilliant...

You had World History for 9th, US History for 10th and US Government (which was History for 11th) and then no mandatory history.
I did most of my schooling in DOD Schools over here in Europe and I have to say I noticed a big difference in the type of schooling. The DOD schools are set up like a public school but are like private schools (only children of Military Personel or Government DOD personel can attend, all other American Citizens have to pay to go to the school) and I found that the studies were more indepth.

Utterly brilliant... | Udet, I would guess that was likely more sarcasm that when in context was somehow aimed at the Bush adminstration than of ignorance of the UK.

Country: | I agree that in most high schools, history and geography are lacking. The options are there, though. I took two semesters of world geography, and a history class every semester for the eight semesters of my high school career. My college requires two semesters of global/international studies and two semesters of history outside of that of the U.S. However, it only requires one semester of science, and my high school required only a year. If you ask me, that's a lot larger of a problem than neglecting geography and history. But that's just my opinion.

In NJ we had biology 1st, chem 2nd year, and a choice of science your third(physics, anatomy and physiology)
It lays a decent foundation - but in reality I don't think chemistry or physics are really important for the average joe.

Country: | My wife actually thought that one time. She knew where the US is on a map but she did not know exactly how large the place was. We were planning a trip and she wanted to look at all the major stuff on the West Coast in like 3 days. Me and my buddy had to cut out a small map of Germany and place it on the west coast to show her how big the place really was.
She comprehends it now...
