Country: | North America vs. Europe/Asia I'm happy to say that I cannot imagine a situation in which the USA, Canada and perhaps other hemispheric allies would engage in combat with any European nation or coalition (NATO quelling unrest or civil war excluded). I'm talking about extremist Baltic countries forming alliences with socialists/communists in Italy, Germany and France 50 years hence in a massive, world war showdown.
It's obvious that lessons have been learned by WW2. The ex-combatants have done a pretty darn good job at toleration, friendship and diplomacy.
BUT WHAT IF??!! WHAT WOULD IT TAKE??
Will America and the Brits ever engage in combat again? America is still rideing the wave of WW2 economics. Sooner or later global equilibrium may set in.
Would our Canadien brothers and friends side with European powers?
Could the U.S. produce a Hitler with authoritarian / police state rule?
I don't want to fight the Swedish.... their women are HOT!
I've been to 18 countries in Europe... I LOVE IT! But what if?
China is much more likely but lets leave that out. |

Country: | As with all "what ifs" of this nature, I wouldn't even begin to imagine all the various possibilities, but there is one thing I'm fairly certain of: Quote:

European or Asian aggression in North America wouldn't sit any better with Canada than it would with the US. On the other side of the coin, even if we maintained friendly relations with Europe in spite of hypothetical American hostility towards them, it frankly wouldn't be in our interest to oppose our powerful nextdoor neighbour. Not if we have so much as half a brain in our collective head. It would be a short fight, I think I can guarantee that right now.
Besides, we've owed America much over the years. You're our best friends, even if some yo-yo's in these parts are too damn blind and stupid to see that. I believe it would be just that simple. 'Course, what the hell do I know?
But then, if by "Canadi en" you mean only Québec (the "e" is the French way of spelling it ), I wouldn't be surprised either way. God only knows how they'd react. |

Trust me I know, I am a US citizen who has lived in Germany for over 20 years. Quote: |

. | I didn't mean to suggest they are. pick your flavor of government that may be antagonistic with the US.
What if Canada joined the EU? |

Not when push came to shove. Our relationship with/reliance on the US is far greater than any formal ties with the Crown. The ironic part is, members of the Canadian Forces still swear an oath to the Queen.
Formalities aside, I can't see it happening. Not really. Quote: |

Country: | From my understanding Canada can not even join the EU even if they wanted.

Country: | Couldn't see it happening. As a "what if", it is doubtful. For that to happen, a totalitarian regime would have to sprout (big time) on one side of the ocean or the other. Given the current level of economic involvement and standard of living, both the US and the Euros are more interested in keeping people out than aquiring/invading others.
As for Canada going the way of the Euros, agree with Adler and Skimmer, very small chance. Tiny. If you look at the history of countries where English is the mother tongue, they pretty much stopped fighting each other about 200 years ago. In fact, there is a decent arguement that the English speaking countries (and their close allies) are the only countries that had a Second World War. The other nations involved fighting regional wars, with minor exceptions. Canada, US, Australia, New Zealand and the English Isles all (loosely) reinforce each other. The mother tongue gig is a very strong cultural link. |

A weakened US does not want to see it's global influence eroded any further and lashes out. |

| Well, about Canada I have no doubt that will side with the US if any Euro-Asian country or alliance will attack the US.
A more intriguing question is : what Canada and UK would do if the US is the aggressor of EU?
Although very unlikely, this scenario is less unlikely than the other one (if nothing elsa, because none of the EU countries has a credible offensive task force)
Probably keep neutral, im my opinion.

Country: | timshatz, what are the English Isles? You mean British Isles.
Great Britain will never go to war again, after the war of 1812 the U.S and Britain became very good friends. And then have become the strongest alliance in history.
The reason is; they can talk to each other on equal terms. Both have been or are a super-power. Both have dealt with similar situations. But, most important of all, to end the War of 1812 the two nations sat down talked to end the fighting without any side trying to demand harsh judgement against the other. So no bitterness is present between the U.S and Great Britain. Whereas, Britain is hated by everyone else for some reason.

They would have to improve their productivity and I am not sure they have the will to do that. China, on the other hand, is something to be concerned about. |

England even sent dimplomats and Military Commanders to view the Confederate Army to help make the decision. They were even present at the Battle of Gettysburg.
