| I am not sure if the oil resources of Canada and Colorado are that easy to exploit, but even if so, there are at least 2 orders of reason to explain why they are not developed
Political : oil is a limited resource, US and Canada prefer to save the stock in their territory and use up other nation resources
Economical : it is cheaper to extract oil from ME, Venezuela etc., the oil sisters make more money out of it and the use of the US$ as standard currency for oil payments put the US in an advantage position in the money market.
And it is not difficult to cut at least in half the fuel consumption: over here gasoline cost 1,2 Euro/ liter, that is about $ 5.90 per US gallon.
So I drive a small diesel car that makes 23 Km/l in highway/city roads, that is about 49 mpg.
Otherwise, having to drive about 70 miles per day to commute, I would have a better trade off in filing for bankrupcy, dressing rags and beg money at the metro stations.
Of course it is not a big SUV, but rationally thinking, who does really need a car as big as a truck? Maybe people living in farms, but surely not all this morons who daily commute to the office in Wagoneer and X5!
US is still a heaven for oil prices, and prices will have to soar a lot more before people will start thinking rationally at transport costs.

| Well Adler, paying gas 1/3 of of standard you can afford some luxury in choosing a car!
And if you like the car you are not a moron. If you buy that car just because SUV is the fashion of the day, then it would be more complicated for me to remain polite
But I don't believe it is your case.
But honestly: do you NEED to drive a big V8 or do you LIKE it?
Because this is the point : until (thank God) we are still able to afford some luxury above the basic need, situation is not bad. Just we should not bitch about the gas price: we have the right to afford the luxury but like every other good thing we must accept to pay for it.
I like the sound of tube amps and I afford the luxury to have one, but I have not the right to complain when they ask me $35 to replace a PT49 valve!
And if I would had bought it only because 'the sound of the valve' was trendy, then I would be a moron

But honestly: do you NEED to drive a big V8 or do you LIKE it? | No I bought the Jeep because Jeeps is all my family has ever owned (other than the Mercedes that they now buy, I wont buy one because it is not a Jeep). I love Jeeps especially the Grand Cherokee like the one that I own. I choose to pay the prices for it because I love it.
As for V8 do I need a V8? No not really, but I do love the sound that it makes and the pulling power that it has, when Im pulling my friends cars out from the snow bank! Honestly though my next Jeep that I will buy in a year or 2 will be a V6 instead of a V8 though.

Country: | Im just gonna buy some Rover P6 V8 for my first car, because with classic insurance I can allow for bigger engines
Jeeps are good prestige cars though, same with Land Rover, and people who buy them get them because of what they are, good cars with solid reputations...When people buy the BMW's and the Mercs for their SUV's I dont understand, because they could just have a normal saloon which is likely to out perform it in every area...
We just got rid of our old Vauxhall Frontera, but we needed that to tow my car for racing, but now Ive given that up we had no need for it so we got rid of it for a Passat. But we have the perfect excuse for an SUV, living on the moor and the crossing of a river is requied to get to my house...

Country: | I enjoy driving out into the country, so that is another good reason for my Jeep.
