I havent seen this kind of paranoia since bush was elected.

Sorry - No seriously - why must it all be so "doomsdayhostile"? To my eye there is a very irrational fear of the unknown and the enemy coming from within. A really good book on this matter is called "Gunfighter Nation" by Richard Slotkin (very heavy reading though  ). Skellz - inspite of his lack of etiquet - made some valid observations. So now I ask you: Why is the political climate so filled with hate in the US? Did 9/11 start it or was it well underway before that?
I look forward to any explanations/opnions you might have. What I believe at the moment is that politics in the US have always been slightly "dirtier" than the rest of the democratic world. Mainly due to the fact that the US is a more multicultural and divided nation than most others. But in my opinion the attacks on 9/11 tipped the scales from: opinions on right and wrong - over to facts on right and wrong. "you are either with us or against us"
Dealing in these sorts of absolutes are dangerous. Not only in foreign politics for which this line was intended.
My point which has been a bit muddled so far is:
What would have been frased:
My opponents view on fighting terror and running the finances in this country is wrong because.... blah blaha bala
Has become either:
1.) My opponent hates america and the flag and the troops.... blah blah blah...
2.) My opponent is a warmongerer who will let your children die for personal benefit... blah blah...
It cannot be healthy for your country to have this type of "debate" - it leaves almost no room for changing minds which is one of the primary benefits we have over totalitarian systems. What I have seen of Obama - and what he IMO earns alot of success on - is that he hasn't used much of the "left and right" or "us and them" rhetoric so far. And people like that. The reason he hasn't is probably due to his history which is used as slander in the original post on this thread - but really it is a positive history: Like many many people he comes from a family where mom and dad didn't stay together. His dad went back to Africa when he was very young
His mother remarried and he moved to Indonesia with her and her new husband. (Try not watching too much fox - it WANS'T a muslim school)
When it was time for highschool he moved to his grandparents in the US. (probably to get a better education that what is obtained in Indonesia)
His family either had alot of money or he got some topgrades since he got into Harvard. But inspite of this he worked as a civil rights activist (not all productiveness is measured in the green). Having seen the problems of the world from outside the view of a combat soldier might help preserve more peace?
His former church is a very afro-centric who's focus on racial problems has been too extreme - and as such he has left it (all the remarks mentioned are grossly taken out of context). But heck I'd rather listen to that preacher than to Pat Buchanan....
He got into state politics and has had a very leftleaning political career.
This would be fairer judgement of his life so far. One final point: Skellz might have been out of line but I find remarks such as "A FATHER WHO GOT A WHITE GIRL PREGNANT AND DESERTED HER" quite distastefull. | |

Ya know, when Obama first came on the scene I was pretty impressed. A very articulate speaker with some new fresh Ideas. Although I recognized his politically liberal voting record in the US senate I was willing to give him a listen. As time went on I was even considering voting for him, but he turned out to be his own worse enemy. During his last days of dueling with Hillabitch I heard and seen some pretty stupid sh!t from him, the most memorable was the way he was pandering to the Pennsylvania gun lobby, what a joke. I was willing to put that aside until I heard about his reaction to McCain's call for off shore oil exploration. Mr. Obama, I thought your response would be a bit more tactful but your inexperience and liberal agenda really showed it's ugly head. What were you thinking, especially when the average price of gas is now well over $4.00 a gallon - are you that f*#king stupid???? YES!

Have you not learned anything from when Reagan was president? Have you not learned that you do not negotiate through weakness but through strength??? You talk about helping out veterans, but how about helping our soldiers and giving them the tools necessary to be the top fighting force on this planet? And in the clip your criticism of Star Was was just ridiculous. I seen some of this technology work, and it does work Mr. Obama, but your too stupid, uneducated or liberal to realize that. One thing about this clip, it did bring back memories of my younger years. Listening to your own words reminded me of Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, and McGovern. Haven't you learned from the mistakes of these people? | Daniel, thats the sound of the Democrats eating themselves up. Much of that hate was during the primaries when Clintonites went against Olabamanites and vice-versa. The Republicans have McCain which while some disgaree with his "hand-across-the-aisle" politics, its still not as vicious as the Dems. They brought out the race card, the feminist angle, etc. And to truly get vicious and nasty, look no further than Move-On.Org or Code Pink - left-wing radicals that the Republicans cannot even come close to the sleeze they vomit forth.
They're eating themselves up.
