Political Reforms In The US

I think the US needs some long overdue reforms in govt. I know some would need a constitutional amendment to be enacted, but lets look at the idea's and not the implementation.

1) Prohibit gerrymandering and not allow "party affiliation" to be a factor to be looked at in defining boundaries. While every effort should be made to create minority majority districts, it cant be used to create geographic oddities, nor divide cohesive urban area's (unless approved by the voters).

2) Senate and House terms limited to 24 yrs each chamber.

3) Senate and House committee chairman assignments made by random choice, and is only good for 1 term for senate and 3 terms for house.

4) Federal judges need reaffirmation by simple majority, by the voters in their judicial districts every 12 years.

5) USSC judges need reaffirmation by simple majority by the voters AND the states in their judicial district every 20 years.

6) Ban lobbyists from providing any gifts, free travel or other stuff to an elected official.

7) Provide federal campaign contributions to any congressman or senator who agree's to not take campaign contributions from any group.

8 ) The Presidential campaign state primary dates will be determined by lottery to provide geographic and "size of state" balance.

9) The states will be required to allow "none of the above" to be a valid vote, and if a majority of votes cast are for that choice, a runoff election has to be scheduled within 4 weeks.

10) Valid identification must be shown for all elections.

You are really going to have a problem with #6. Our Reps and Senators
love those golf outings to Bermuda.... paid for my those who'd like to get
the Reps and Senators into their pockets.

Reforms are needed but the problem is that it would require a constitutional convention. If a convention is called, the floor is open to all amendments. I can alread see the nut jobs trying to get universal health care, removing the right to own arms, free benefits to all people living in the world reguardless of where they are living...it could be a nightmare.

The ideas are sound and yes, implementation would be tough to say the least.

I would also like to see presidents limited to one six-year term. This way a president can concentrate on leadership, not running for re-election.

Also a law barring First Ladies from running for president (sorry, I couldn't resist)

Since the Clintons said that they were running together and we were getting two for one, I think that she would also be prohibited from running for a third term.
