PRC intentions in the Pacific

Well, I bet the countries of the western pacific are breathing easier now that the US has refused to recognize Chinese hedgemony over them.
Inside the Ring*--*The Washington Times, America's Newspaper

Division rejected

The senior Air Force commander in the Pacific this week threw cold water on a Chinese military proposal to divide up the Pacific Ocean into U.S. and Chinese spheres of influence.

Gen. Paul V. Hester was asked about China's recent plan to give the United States control of the eastern Pacific region, while China would control the western Pacific.

"Our policy is not to cede space to anyone," Gen. Hester said in a telephone press conference from Hawaii.

Sounds like reporter fluff. Nobody is going to give up anything to anyone. While we (and the whole world) will recognize China has interests in the Pacific, it's not their bathtub to splish-splash with a rubber duck as they like. Think they know that too.

And if they don't, they have the Japanese Navy to contend with. If we were to pull back to Pearl, abandon Guam, Okinawa and Japan, then the Japanese would kick it in gear. The Japanese and Chinese have been at each other's throats for a couple thousand years and the US pulling back would mean that would probably start up again.

Besides, Chinese are more interested in Taiwan and the Spratleys.

Won't get into the here's and why's of the A-bomb (another thread on this board that has been kicked around extensively). If you poke around in the past threads, you'll see it and it is a pretty good thread.

As for the Japanese and the Chinese, kinda wish we were further away from it. Yeah, the Chinese definitely have a bone to pick with the Japanese. There is a duality to the relationship that is wierd. The two countries trade a lot but at the same time, have a long and really ugly history that comes up all the time. The whole thing is skitzo.

I think, at the present time, things are pretty chummy twix China & Japan.
However, if one were to really step on the others toes.......

It's a fact that China would like to get back at the Japanese for little things.... like Nanking....

Still..... there is no reason to give China half of the Pacific.

Japan spends upwards of 40 billion a year on defense, and that is still less than 1% of her GDP. She can spend MUCH more than that on her defense if she chooses to. You're talking about a nation with almost a 5 trillion dollar economy.

There's no need for the US to "re-arm" Japan.
